Unenvironmentalism

Why are the Republicans so skilled at using something that seems good to do bad? A new bill is being touted as a way to close the so-called "Hummer" loop-hole, that allows Hummers and other outrageously large trucks and SUVs exemptions from fuel economy standards. The Republicans are talking about how much oil this is going to save and what great environmentalists they are and I thought to myself, "hey this sounds good."

Wrong. In fact, most pickup trucks will still be exempt, the rules don't kick in until like 2011, AND worst of all - - the real reason Bush and his cronies want this to pass is so there will be a federal law that preempts more proactive state fuel economy laws (like those in California).

[Law nerd interlude: the doctrine of federal preemption (generally) states that where a federal law and a state law on the same topic conflict, the federal law trumps and the state law becomes invalid.]

So now it all becomes painfully clear, the Republicans want their crappy law to replace CA's and the 10 states that have modeled their laws on CA's, thereby lowering fuel economy requirements and targets. And they wrap it all up in what seems like an environmentally friendly package.

That's why I voted Chihuahua in the last election, and why I will continue to vote Chihuahua. Some people think that Chihuahuas are not electable. But the Hummer-lovers who are electable are stupid. So that logic doesn't persuade me. Chihuahua in '06.
